Cuban piano virtuoso Daniel Amat possesses a “beautifully robust percussive command on the instrument” (DownBeat) that incorporates the musical influences of his upbringing as the son of Cuban tres master Pancho Amat.
Trained in the classical tradition at Havana’s National School of Art, Amat incorporated the influence of Oscar Peterson he assimilated during his student days into a singular style that brings fresh perspectives to the Son, Changui, Guaguanco, and Danzon of his homeland. Now based in Spain, he’s collaborated with an extensive list of Cuban jazz greats Chucho Valdés, Arturo Sandoval, and Orlando “Maraca” Valle, and released a pair of accomplished albums including his 2006 debut El Piano Que Llevo Dentro, which won the 2005 Cubadisco prize for instrumental music, and his new Quandrant Records release Hermano, an inspired recording co-led with Spanish bassist Francis Posé.
